My idea of an enjoyable afternoon: Ponyo with the 9-year-old.
BTW, Sosuke’s mother is a terrifying driver.
That Wasn’t So Bad

The Olympics are over, and we saw most of what we wanted to watch live.
We did it WITHOUT having access to a television signal. We don’t have a satellite subscription, there is no cable TV here and we can’t pick up much of anything with our antenna.
Everything we watched we saw online (well, with the exception of the end of the women’s curling gold medal game, which we saw while eating snacks at an out-of-town restaurant because we couldn’t get home in time).
It would’ve been better if they hadn’t streamed using crap-ass Silverlight, and there were a couple of instances where we lost the feed for a few minutes due to network congestion. Actually, on the first day the olympics feed site went down for about an hour, so there was that glitch. But overall, it worked out well.
I’m glad we have our own internet connection now, streaming from the library would’ve been a nightmare.
12 Gold (so far)
by PolarBear on February 27th, 2010
I remember watching the Olympics as a kid and the story for Canada was always been something like “Well, being 10th best in the world is still pretty good.”
I’m delighted to see we’ve finally broken through and won a few medals. It isn’t often that we’ve had the most medals of ANY colour during an Olympics, let alone gold. The kids are witnessing history – who knows if this will ever happen again?
But – I need to stay away from the chatter on the vancouver2010.com page. The sense of sour grapes and hostility from American posters is palpable. I am actually stunned by the reaction.
I’m tearing up reading about Petra Majdic of Slovenia who won a bronze medal in cross-country skiing with 4 cracked ribs and a collapsed lung and had to be helped onto the podium to receive her medal, and I’m happy to watch any athlete win gold no matter what country they are from… hell, even to see them participate in the Olympics… because these people put in YEARS of work to get to this level.
Yet this group of douchebags is slamming Canada because they’ve won the most gold this time around?
REALLY America?
Could some of the decent United States citizens I know from here please go over there and teach your trolls some manners?
HE DID A BARREL ROLL!

And Alexandre Bilodeau just won the first Olympic gold medal for Canada on Canadian soil, ever.
Pretty damn cool.
And we still have 2 weeks to go. Quite a difference from Calgary in 1988, where we won 2 silver and 3 bronze, and that’s all.
Damn kids are never going to go to bed, now.

The kids and I love watching the Freestyle Skiing, but it’s probably best that I’m not there in person. I doubt most of these guys would be amused that I scream “DO A BARREL ROLL” every time they hit the jumps.
